Fake whey protein: how to check a tub is genuine
Whey sold properly in Thailand must carry a Thai label with a set of details. You can check them yourself in a few minutes, and the method works for any shop, ours included.
What a Thai label must show
Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 367 (2014) on labelling food in sealed containers, and its amendment No. 383, require Thai text on the label and a food registration number (what people call the "FDA number"). Imported food must show the importer's name and address, marked "importer" or "imported by", and a date marked "best before" or "expiry". An imported tub with no Thai label at all is the first thing to ask the shop about.
How to check the FDA number
A food registration number has 13 digits, usually printed in groups such as 10-3-12345-6-7890. Check it on the Thai FDA website (fda.moph.go.th) or on LINE @FDAThai: tap the product-number check menu and type the number exactly, with no spaces. If it is found, the system shows the product's status; if not, it sends a warning. For doubts or complaints, call the Thai FDA hotline 1556.
The number matches. What next?
- Does the product name the system shows match the tub? A real number copied from another product will not match the name
- Flavour: some brands register each flavour separately. For example, the BAAM My Whey Protein Max listing on HomePro shows a list of numbers by flavour, so match the number to the flavour you hold
- Importer: the name on the Thai sticker should be a company you can contact, not blank or just an online shop name
- Lot and date: clearly printed, not scratched off or covered
- Price: suspiciously far below the usual Thai price? Ask where the stock came from. See usual prices on whey prices for every brand
Which ads to be wary of
The Thai FDA warns against ads that exaggerate benefits, especially for dietary supplements, and does not allow supplements to be advertised as treating disease or helping weight loss. Treat whey sold with claims like these with caution.
What our store shows
Every product page has a "verifiable details" section with the FDA number, importer, lot and expiry date. Any field not yet checked against a real tub says so plainly. The refund terms if a product is proven not genuine are on our authenticity guarantee page.
