Unflavoured and less-sweet whey: how to choose from the label

People who search for unflavoured or less-sweet whey usually want one of three things: they dislike very sweet shakes, they want to mix it into food or drinks themselves, or they want to limit sugar. Each one is read from a different part of the label.

What is unflavoured whey?

Unflavoured whey has no added flavouring; it tastes faintly of milk and mixes easily into other things. Some brands add no sweetener at all and some still do, so read that product's ingredients. In our store right now the product with an unflavoured option is BAAM ISO Absolute Zero.

No sugar doesn't mean not sweet

Low-sugar whey that still tastes sweet mostly uses sweeteners instead of sugar. The U.S. FDA approves 6 as food additives: aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, neotame, advantame and saccharin, and has not questioned the GRAS status of high-purity stevia extract and monk fruit extract. They are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so tiny amounts are used and they add almost no calories. If you dislike a sharp sweetness, look for these names in the ingredients.

Sugar alcohols, another group to know

Names ending in -itol, such as sorbitol, maltitol and xylitol, also sweeten, but in larger amounts some people get bloating or diarrhoea. Details and amounts are in whey protein side effects.

Where does the sugar in whey come from?

Whey comes from milk, so it carries some lactose, the sugar in milk. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adults keep free sugars below 10% of daily energy, with further benefits below 5%, about 25 g (6 teaspoons). That advice counts added sugars, not the sugars naturally present in milk. If a label gives only total sugars, you can't tell what was added, so check the ingredients for cane sugar, sucrose or dextrose. The FDA explains that total sugars on a label include both natural and added sugars.

Making it easy to drink without adding sugar

  • Mix with unsweetened milk or soy milk for a smoother taste, counting the milk's calories too
  • Blend with a banana so the sweetness comes from fruit instead of sugar
  • For a flavoured whey, start with more water to make the taste milder

Which flavour tastes best?

We have no taste scores from real buyers yet, so we don't say which product tastes best. If you're unsure, start with a small tub or a trial pack; every product's flavours are listed under every whey we stock. The store's low-sugar collection opens once sugar per scoop is checked on real labels; it stays hidden until then so we don't guess numbers.
