Nestlé Boost and Ensure vs whey protein: who each is for

25 Grams does not sell Boost or Ensure. We wrote this page because people often search for these two brands together with "whey". Every fact comes from the product listings at the end, checked on 19 Oct 2026. This page is not medical advice.

Nestlé BOOST Optimum and Ensure Gold sold in Thailand sit under "medical food" on the listings we checked, and Ensure's product name calls it a complete-nutrition formula: built to give energy, protein and other nutrients in one glass. Whey protein mainly gives protein. The two are meant for different jobs.

What the labels say

  • Nestlé BOOST Optimum 800 g: the ingredients include whey protein concentrate 10% and casein 10% (both milk proteins). Mix 7 scoops (55 g) with 210 ml of water for 250 ml; 1–2 glasses a day are suggested. The listing we checked does not give protein per glass
  • Ensure Gold AdvancePro 800 g: three proteins, whey, casein and soy. Mix 6 level scoops with 195 ml of water for 262 kcal per 230 ml and 10.5 g of protein per serving; use within 3 weeks of opening

Compared with a scoop of whey

By the labels of the whey we stock, a scoop gives 18–36 g of protein from 80–220 kcal. A glass of Ensure gives 10.5 g of protein from 262 kcal. The numbers differ because the goals differ: a complete-nutrition formula aims to supply energy and nutrients, while whey aims to add protein without many calories. Comparing the two by price per gram of protein is not fair, because you pay for different things.

Which suits whom?

  • Older adults who eat little, patients, or anyone advised by a doctor or dietitian to use a complete-nutrition formula: follow that advice; whey does not replace it
  • Healthy people eating full meals but short of their protein target: whey adds protein without many calories; the method is in how many scoops of whey a day
  • Over 40 and want more protein: see whey for people over 40
  • Kidney disease or told to limit protein: ask a doctor first, for both

Both contain milk

Boost, Ensure and whey all contain milk protein, so people with a cow's milk allergy must avoid them all. Mayo Clinic warns that milk allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a medical emergency. On whether whey can replace a meal, read do you need whey?.
